Susan Nweze, a 37-year-old single mother from Ebonyi, has denied claims that she sold her newborn for ₦25 million.
Speaking from her home in Abakaliki, she said she only received ₦700,000 as support after legally giving the child up for adoption.
“I didn’t sell my baby. I only gave him out for adoption because I wasn’t ready,” she said. “The ₦700,000 I received was to help me recover from delivery.”
Susan, who already has two older children — a 19-year-old daughter and a 12-year-old son — said her decision came from hardship.
“I have nothing doing and no help from anywhere,” she added. “I’m a single mother and knew I couldn’t train another child.”
Family Accuses Police, Demands Baby’s Return
But the woman’s family is not convinced.
In a petition through their lawyer, Nzogbu Kingsley, they alleged that some police officers “connived and sold the baby for ₦25 million, while a paltry ₦700,000 was given to Susan.”
The complaint was addressed to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation Department, Enugu.
The family also accused the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), NAPTIP, and the Ebonyi Ministry of Women Affairs of complicity. They want the child released to them.
Government Reacts, Denies Baby Sale
Mr Ikeuwa Omebeh, Commissioner for Information and Orientation in Ebonyi, said the claims of a baby sale were “unfounded.”
He confirmed the mother had voluntarily given up the baby, stating: “She was not financially and emotionally stable to keep the baby.”
According to him, the ministry is handling the case under the law, and investigations are still ongoing.
Mrs Felicia Nwankpuma, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, also dismissed the sale rumour.
“The child is with us. It’s in the custody of the ministry,” she said. “No baby was sold. I don’t know where the ₦25 million story is coming from.”
She insisted that the ministry only acted to protect the child’s welfare and was not part of any illegal dealings.
