Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that the city will make history as the first African host of the prestigious E1 Racing Championship.
The event is scheduled for October 4th and 5th, 2025, and will take place along the Lagos waterfront.
In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Sanwo-Olu shared highlights from his visit to Monaco, where he attended the latest stage of the championship.
“This weekend, we were in Monaco experiencing the E1 Racing Championship. It was a good reminder of how innovation, determination, and bold ideas can come together to create something truly groundbreaking,” he wrote.
Lagos Joins Global Clean Energy Conversation
The E1 Championship is the world’s first all-electric powerboat racing series, launched in 2024 by Formula E founder Alejandro Agag and former Formula 1 engineer Rodi Basso.
It features RaceBird boats—electric hydrofoils that reach speeds of up to 93 km/h—designed to promote clean energy and sustainable marine transport.
Sanwo-Olu described Lagos’ inclusion as a “major milestone” for both the sport and the city. “It shows that Lagos is ready to be part of the global conversation on clean energy, sustainability, and new approaches to marine transportation,” he said.
The governor added that the event will allow Lagos to showcase its vibrant culture, hospitality, and innovation.
“This is an opportunity to show the world what makes Lagos special—our culture, our energy, and our people,” he said.
Afreximbank and Team Drogba Back Lagos
Sanwo-Olu thanked Afreximbank for its support in securing the hosting rights. The bank is a key investor in Team Drogba, one of the championship’s celebrity-owned teams led by Ivorian football legend Didier Drogba.
“I’m grateful to Afreximbank for their support, not just as a partner but as a believer in what Lagos can achieve,” Sanwo-Olu said. “Their investment in Team Drogba and their commitment to this vision mean a great deal.”
The governor concluded with optimism: “We’re bringing a world-class sporting event to our shores, we’re opening a new chapter for Lagos and I can’t wait for the world to see what we have to offer.”
The announcement comes as Lagos ramps up its own electric water transport initiative—the €410 million Omi Eko project—which includes 78 electric ferries and 25 terminals, backed by the EU, AFD, and EIB.
