Women’s Euro 2025: Germany Eliminate France in Dramatic Penalty Shootout to Reach Semi-Finals
Germany’s women’s national team are through to the semi-finals of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 after a tense 6–5 victory on penalties against France, following a 1–1 draw after extra time in Basel, Switzerland.
The match began with early drama as Germany’s Kathrin Hendrich was shown a straight red card in the 13th minute for a last-player foul. France took the lead through Grace Geyoro, who converted the resulting penalty.
Despite being down to 10 players, Germany equalised through Sjoeke Nüsken in the 25th minute. Both teams created chances in extra time but couldn’t find a breakthrough, sending the match to penalties.
Ann-Katrin Berger, Germany’s experienced goalkeeper and two-time cancer survivor, was the hero of the shootout—saving two penalties and even scoring one herself during sudden death.
Germany now move on to face Spain in the semi-finals, scheduled for Wednesday, July 23, in Zurich.
France, who have now been eliminated by Germany in three straight major tournaments, exit at the quarter-final stage once again.
This win marks Germany’s continued dominance in the Women’s Euros, having lifted the trophy a record eight times.
