The Enugu State Government has demolished a Smart Green School in Mbu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area, after discovering serious structural defects.
The school, part of a larger education initiative, failed integrity tests conducted by the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure on July 16.
Chairman of Isi-Uzo LGA, Barr. Obiora Obeagu, said the contractor had been warned weeks earlier to fix the issues. But the building still showed “significant cracks” during inspection, prompting Governor Peter Mbah to order its demolition and terminate the contract.
“The contractors misrepresented their compliance, betraying the trust of the state government,” Obeagu said. “The governor had not just directed the demolition of the particular structure involved, but also the immediate termination of the contract.”
Over 1,500 Projects Underway Across Enugu
The Smart Green School is one of 260 being built across the state’s 260 wards. The government is also constructing 260 Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres, making up part of over 1,500 ongoing projects under Governor Mbah’s administration.
Following the demolition, Isi-Uzo LGA took over the site and began working with engineers to reinforce other structures.
The state has also deployed a three-tiered monitoring system to prevent future lapses, involving local engineers, the Ministry of Works, and the Governor’s Delivery Unit.
Obeagu said the swift action sends a clear message: “It is no longer business as usual. It speaks to zero tolerance for sharp practices under this administration.”
He added that the Smart Green Schools initiative is “extremely close to the governor’s heart,” and reflects his commitment to quality education and infrastructure.
