Chief Jude Ezenwafor, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for the upcoming Anambra State election, narrowly escaped death after being shot by unknown gunmen in Abuja.
The attack occurred on Friday night, July 18, around Wuse 2, while Ezenwafor was returning home from a private engagement. He was shot alongside two others who were with him in the vehicle.
Ezenwafor is receiving treatment at a private hospital in Abuja. Doctors are preparing to perform surgery to remove multiple bullets lodged in his body.
“I’m currently in the hospital. The doctors are making efforts to operate me so that they can pull out bullets from my body,” he told journalists from his hospital bed on Saturday morning.
The condition of the other victims remains unclear.
Security agencies have begun investigating the incident, though no official statement has been released yet.
The PDP campaign team has confirmed that the attack has been reported to the police.
The shooting has raised concerns about political violence ahead of the November 2025 Anambra governorship election.
Ezenwafor, who previously ran as a presidential aspirant under the Labour Party before returning to PDP, was recently endorsed as the party’s flagbearer.
