Labour Party Elects Nenadi Usman as Interim Chair

The Labour Party has taken a bold step to reorganise its leadership. On Friday, July 18, the party’s statutory National Executive Committee (NEC) elected Senator Nenadi Usman as Interim National Chairman.

Senator Darlington Nwokocha was also named Interim National Secretary. Both will lead the party until a full convention is held.

The NEC meeting took place in Abuja and drew key figures, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero.

“Anyone who is not with us and is not working with the Labour force and claims to be the party’s chairman is a daydreamer. When the day of reckoning comes, we will say we don’t know you,” Otti said.

The interim working committee will oversee all party activities until elections for a new NEC are conducted. The NEC also approved a full schedule for ward, local government, state, zonal congresses, and the national convention.

The National Secretariat has been directed to publish guidelines and timelines to ensure transparent elections across all levels.

“There is a need to restructure this party, rebrand it, because that is the only way this party can work,” Otti added.

Ajaero described the Labour Party as “a party for the common man” and urged members not to lose hope despite internal challenges.

Governor Otti explained that the NEC meeting was convened in line with the Supreme Court’s ruling, which affirmed Nenadi Usman’s leadership.

“As law-abiding people, we felt we should obey the Supreme Court judgement,” he said. “What we are here to do is to begin a structured process.”

He called on the Julius Abure-led faction to accept the court’s decision and rejoin the party through reconciliation.

“All we are asking them to do is to write a letter of apology so that the interim leaders of the party can recall them,” he said.

Otti also noted that while the NLC formed the party, “now the party is bigger than the NLC.”

Is this the end of the leadership crisis in the Labour Party, or will there soon be a sharp response from the Julius Abure faction?
