Artificial Intelligence: China Launches First Fully AI‑Powered Hospital
China has launched the world’s first fully AI-powered hospital, called Agent Hospital, developed by Tsinghua University. The virtual facility is run entirely by 14 AI doctors and 4 AI nurses, with no human medical staff involved.
According to the developers, the AI agents can simulate over 3,000 patient visits per day, diagnosing and treating more than 300 medical conditions across 21 clinical departments.
The AI system has achieved a 93.06% accuracy rate in trials based on the US Medical Licensing Exam, equaling or surpassing human-level performance.
Executive Dean Liu Yang said the technology aims to “reduce doctors’ workload” and improve healthcare access in underserved areas.
The hospital also serves as a medical training platform, allowing students to practise clinical skills in a virtual environment with real-time feedback.
The project is seen as a major leap in medical innovation, with potential implications for healthcare delivery in developing nations, including Nigeria.
