Ali M. Ali, boss of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), says BRICS is changing the shape of the world. It’s moving the needle on global governance, trade, development and diplomacy.
He spoke on Wednesday at the 7th BRICS Media Forum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He described the bloc as a growing force in global affairs.
“With nearly 40% of the world’s population and 25% of global GDP, BRICS is the place to be,” he said.
Ali gave numbers that show the weight of BRICS in world trade. “We are not just a grouping of emerging economies; we are a force to be reckoned with. And our influence is growing by the day.”
BRICS Numbers Dwarf G7
BRICS accounts for 40% of world manufacturing. It also produces 42% of wheat, 52% of rice, and 46% of soybeans globally.
Ali said its GDP stands at $63.2 trillion—well above the G7’s $52.3 trillion.
He referenced IMF forecasts, saying, “China alone will contribute 22% of global growth over the next five years—more than all G7 nations combined.” You can find more about the IMF forecasts here.
Over 10 countries have joined BRICS partnerships, with over 30 seeking entry. Ali quoted Vox South, a Beijing-based commentator: “The most compelling reason for the growing influence of BRICS is its composite strength.”
Nigeria Seeks BRICS Membership
Ali believes Nigeria is ready to step in. With its position in Africa and its desire to reshape world power, he says it makes sense.
“Our partnership with BRICS is built on three key pillars. First, we see BRICS as a natural fit for Nigeria, given our shared goals and values.”
He continued: “Second, we are keen to reduce our dependence on the US-centric international system and promote a multipolar world.”
“Third, joining BRICS helps us position ourselves as an emerging power on the global stage.”
He said it aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda: “This transformative policy thrust is aimed at repositioning Nigeria as a prime global investment destination.”
Ali wrapped up with a bold vision: “The BRICS voice is, indeed, loud and clear. We envision a prosperous Global South and a more just and equitable world.”
