The remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari have arrived in Nigeria from London ahead of his burial in Daura, Katsina State, scheduled for later today.
President Bola Tinubu, Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda, senior government officials, and members of Buhari’s family were present at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Airport to receive the body, which departed the UK earlier in the day.
Former President Buhari died in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, following a brief illness. He was 82 years old.
A sombre ceremony held earlier at Umaru Musa Yar’adua Airport in Katsina saw President Bola Tinubu receive the late leader’s body.
The casket, flown in from London, was accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, who joined the President in paying last respects.
Top political leaders from across the country gathered in Katsina for the final rites.
Those present included former Vice Presidents Yemi Osinbajo and Atiku Abubakar, as well as ex-Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi.
Former governors also in attendance were Aminu Bello Masari, Aminu Tambuwal, Yahaya Bello, Ibikunle Amosun, Aliyu Wamakko, Kayode Fayemi, and Ali Modu Sheriff.
Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan and ex-Women Affairs Minister, Pauline Tallen, were also sighted at the venue.
In a rare diplomatic gesture, Niger Republic’s Prime Minister, Ali Lamine, also arrived for the burial, showing the late president’s reach beyond Nigeria’s borders.
Akume Heads Committee for State Burial
To ensure a smooth and honourable burial, an inter-ministerial committee led by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has been put in charge.
According to a statement from the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, the committee includes several key ministers and senior security personnel.
Their assignment: deliver a “befitting state burial” for the former Head of State.
Buhari passed away in London on Sunday at about 4:30 p.m., following a long battle with illness.
He had ruled Nigeria as a military Head of State between 1984 and 1985, and later returned to power as a civilian president from 2015 to 2023.
His death has sparked an outpouring of reactions nationwide and abroad, with many remembering his controversial but firm leadership.
Buhari’s final journey to Daura marks the end of a long political chapter. He is expected to be buried according to Islamic rites in his hometown later today.
