Peter Obi Explains Why ADC Should Zone 2027 Ticket to the South

The Labour Party‘s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has appealed to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South.

He said this would help preserve unity, equity, and national cohesion in the country.

Speaking in Ilọrin during the 2nd Annual Colloquium in honour of Associate Professor Abdulmumin Yinka Ajia, Obi addressed journalists through Dr Tanko Yunusa, the National Coordinator of the Obidients Movement.

Obi noted that the South deserves the next presidency, especially since northern Nigeria produced the previous leader.

“Let the South complete their tenure”

In Obi’s words: “Why should we have a northerner again when we can easily allow the South to complete their tenure to promote unity and cohesiveness? Afterwards, our northern brothers can take up their eight years.”

He urged all parties involved in the newly formed coalition to ensure that “this matter is finished” by zoning the ticket southward.

Obi said such a move would prevent repeating the political imbalance that once led to the “late Moshood Abiola debacle.”

A coalition of opposition parties recently adopted the ADC as a platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next general election. The group named former Senate President David Mark as interim national chairman and former minister Rauf Aregbesola as secretary.

While former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is reportedly eyeing the ADC ticket, Obi, and former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi — both from the South — had earlier pledged to serve only one term if elected in 2027.

Dr Yunusa reaffirmed Obi’s resolve: “Obi has already stated that he will contest in 2027 whether we get the coalition ticket or not. So we are not even contemplating whether or not he will run.”

He added that when the time comes, “the platform will be revealed.”

Obi also expressed confidence about his chances, describing himself as a capable and committed leader determined to transform Nigeria.

What are your thoughts? Should the presidency stay in the South in 2027 for the sake of fairness and unity?
