Nigeria Declares 7 Days of Mourning Over Death of Ex-President Buhari

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid a solemn tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a patriot, soldier, and statesman whose life was marked by discipline and service.

The former president passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a hospital in London at the age of 82.

In a personal statement released that same day, President Tinubu said “we honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul.”

Tinubu described Buhari as “a champion of discipline in public service, who confronted corruption head-on and placed the country above personal interest at every turn.”

He recalled that Buhari served Nigeria with “unwavering dedication from January 1984 to August 1985” as Head of State, and again from 2015 to 2023 as a democratically elected President.

“To the very core, he was a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman,” Tinubu declared.

The president sent his deepest condolences to Buhari’s widow, Aisha Buhari, “with whom I have been in constant touch,” and to their children, the entire Buhari family, and all who knew and loved him.

He also extended sympathies to the people of Katsina State, and especially the Daura Emirate, Buhari’s hometown.

Federal Government Declares National Mourning

In honour of Buhari’s memory, President Tinubu announced that national flags would fly at half-staff for seven days starting from Sunday, July 13.

He also summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting for Tuesday, July 15, to dedicate to Buhari’s memory.

“The Federal Government will accord President Buhari full state honours befitting his towering contributions to our country,” the president said.

Buhari’s burial arrangements are yet to be formally announced, but government officials confirmed the late former president will be laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.

The Nigerian leader prayed that “Buhari’s life continues to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.”
