Former President Goodluck Jonathan has paid tribute to the late Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as “a courageous leader, a disciplined officer, and a committed public servant.”
In a post shared via his verified X handle @GEJonathan, the former president mourned the 82-year-old, who led Nigeria both as a military Head of State and a civilian president.
“It is with a heavy heart and profound sense of national loss that I received the news of the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari who died at the age of 82,” Jonathan wrote.
He said Buhari gave his best in service to the country and would be remembered for his dedication to Nigeria’s peace and progress.
A Leader with Enduring Values
Jonathan described Buhari as “a notable leader, patriot, and elder statesman who served our beloved nation… to the best of his abilities.”
He said the late president was deeply admired for his “decency, integrity and exemplary life of service.”
“As a leader, he was selfless in his commitment to his duty and served the country with character and a deep sense of patriotism,” Jonathan added.
Jonathan acknowledged Buhari’s dual legacy—as a military leader in the 1980s and a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023—as a unique contribution to Nigeria’s history.
A Nation in Mourning
Jonathan described Buhari’s death as a national loss, saying “Nigeria has lost one of its foremost leaders, and I have lost a respected colleague and elder.”
He praised Buhari’s life of sacrifice and devotion to national values, noting that “his legacy will continue to endure in the hearts of all who value sacrifice, integrity, perseverance and devotion to national ethos.”
The former president sent his condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians mourning the former leader.
“On behalf of my family and the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, the good people of Katsina State and all Nigerians who mourn this great loss.”
Jonathan also offered prayers for the deceased leader:
“May Allah forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Jannatul Firdaus.”
