The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in memory of Nigeria’s late former president, Muhammadu Buhari.
The declaration comes as part of a national mourning period announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following Buhari’s death in London at the age of 82.
According to a press statement from the Ministry of Interior, the announcement was made by Interior Minister Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, with the approval of President Tinubu.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the statement read.
Day of Reflection and National Unity
The Federal Government urged Nigerians to use the public holiday to reflect on Buhari’s legacy of discipline and patriotism.
“This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” Tunji-Ojo said.
The statement also directed that all national flags fly at half-mast throughout the seven-day mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13.
Buhari, who ruled Nigeria as a military leader from 1984 to 1985 and then as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, died after weeks of medical care in a London hospital.
Shettima Receives Buhari’s Body in London
Vice President Kashim Shettima had been dispatched to London to receive Buhari’s remains and accompany them back to Nigeria.
Photos from London showed a visibly grieving Aisha Buhari, the late president’s widow, as Vice President Shettima paid her a condolence visit at a private residence in the British capital.

Buhari’s burial arrangements are expected to be announced soon, with national prayers and tributes planned for Abuja and his hometown in Katsina.
The Federal Government also offered condolences to the Buhari family and all Nigerians, praying for his soul’s peaceful repose.
“May his soul find eternal rest. Nigeria owes him a debt of gratitude,” the statement concluded.
