The All Progressives Congress (APC) has swept all 57 chairmanship seats and 375 of 376 councillorship positions in the local government elections held on Saturday across Lagos State.
The announcement was made on Sunday by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), which declared the APC victorious in all 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state.
However, opposition parties—including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP)—have rejected the outcome. They alleged massive irregularities, logistical failures, and vote rigging in multiple locations across the state.
Only one councillorship seat—Ward D in Yaba LCDA—was won by the PDP, where its candidate, Babatunde Dosunmu, defeated the APC opponent.
The elections were also marked by late arrival of materials, poor voter turnout, and widespread reports of disenfranchisement.
Supporters were thrilled when the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) announced the outcome. The APC clinched all 57 chairmanship seats and 375 of 376 councillorship positions in Saturday’s polls.
In a surprising twist, the PDP secured a rare win in Ward D, Yaba LCDA. Its candidate, former APC member Babatunde Dosunmu, claimed victory over the APC contender.
“As far as the Labour Party in Lagos State is concerned, there was no election today… The level of malpractices we witnessed today is unprecedented in the history of elections in Nigeria,” said Labour Party’s Sam Okpala, describing the exercise as a “complete sham.”

Opposition Reacts to Alleged Irregularities
Opposition parties rejected the process, citing “widespread irregularities, voter suppression, and ballot box stuffing.”
“Where there is a semblance of voting, it’s all about ballot box stuffing… already thumb‑printed ballot papers [were] stuffed in the boxes,” said LP’s Okpala.
PDP’s Deputy Chairman Tai Benedict added: “What the APC did today is not new… We won’t be surprised if the total number of votes recorded for the APC… is more than the total votes that Tinubu scored in Lagos during the 2023 presidential election.”
SDP’s Femi Olaniyi also alleged exclusion: “The ballot paper carried APC and PDP… No other political party… This is daylight robbery.”
Earlier, former deputy governor Bucknor‑Akerele demanded scrapping the polls: “I couldn’t vote because my polling unit was moved… There are units meant to be in front of Eko Hotel… they’ve been moved here to Ajose Adeogun,” she complained.
Logistics, Voter Apathy, and Official Praise
Early delays plagued the vote. Many polling units opened late, sparking frustration among voters and officials. One LASIEC presiding officer noted fuel shortages and mis‑direction of materials as causes.
Voter turnout was low. Some youths played football near polling units while others blamed missing voter cards.
APC’s Seye Oladejo said, “There is no doubt about APC’s victory… based on our performance at various levels.”
Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu and others expectedly praised LASIEC for a “largely hitch‑free process,” despite acknowledging minor logistical hitches.
The EFCC were also seen supposedly monitoring the elections to ensure no financial inducement was taking place at polling units across the state.
