Lagos LG Elections: Voting Starts Gradually in Ijegun Region

The local government election in Lagos State commenced sluggishly on Saturday. Election officials arrived behind schedule.

LASIEC representatives reached Ijegun at 9:30 am, more than an hour overdue. The election was scheduled to commence at 8 a.m.

By 10 a.m., voting had yet to start, although it was intended to conclude by 3 p.m. Five polling units at Ijegun Primary School were lacking voting materials.

A voter named Dare Ajayi had been waiting since 7 a.m. He expressed his frustration over the absence of voting materials.

Other individuals, primarily senior citizens, were also in attendance. Ajayi mentioned he would leave soon if the situation did not improve.

Polling unit 59 at Ijegun Local Government Primary School was still awaiting voting materials at 11:25 a.m.

Some polling units initiated voting but experienced a low turnout, with voters gradually arriving to cast their votes.

LASIEC indicated that the elections involve 57 positions for chairmanship and vice-chairmanship, along with 376 councillor seats. Voting takes place in 13,325 polling units across Lagos.

Of the 7.1 million registered voters, around 6.2 million have collected their voter cards. However, 845,225 cards have not been picked up, which could influence turnout.

Impact on Turnout

Even with the slow beginning, the local government election is vital for democracy in Lagos. The delays and low voter turnout raise apprehensions about future elections.

Polling units that started accreditation saw fewer voters than anticipated.

Lagos has over 7 million registered voters. Yet, more than 800,000 voter cards remain unclaimed. This could have an effect on the election of local officials.

It is essential to assess how the logistics on election day impact participation.
