UBA Expands Global Footprint, Forays Into Saudi Arabia, Grows in France

UBA Group has reaffirmed its pan-African ambition with bold new moves aimed at deepening its presence across key African markets and expanding globally.

The Group’s top executives gathered at UBA’s global headquarters in Lagos for the 2024 Half Year Business Review, led by Group Managing Director/CEO, Oliver Alawuba.

With operations in 24 countries and more than half (51.7%) of its revenue now coming from outside Nigeria, UBA is steadily becoming Africa’s most diversified financial services group.

A Vision for Africa, A Strategy for the World

UBA first entered Ghana in 2004, marking the beginning of its pan-African journey. Since then, it has expanded into 18 more African countries.

Today, UBA stands as a resilient, future-forward bank connecting Africa to the world and the world to Africa.

Alawuba shared the bank’s future direction with optimism. “UBA’s vision is clear—we are building a truly global institution anchored in Africa, but serving customers across continents.”

Bank Chairman, Anthony Onyekachi Elumelu

He said the bank remains committed to unlocking new opportunities, supporting intra-African trade, and delivering “world-class banking experiences wherever our clients choose to do business.”

According to Alawuba, the bank is confident in the continent’s economic growth. “We are excited about the vast opportunities that new markets present,” he said.

Saudi Arabia, France, and New York in Focus

UBA recently announced its entry into Saudi Arabia and is also upgrading its license in France. This move is meant to strengthen support for cross-border investment, diaspora banking, and trade finance.

“In Europe, UBA has operations in the United Kingdom and is upgrading its license in France,” Alawuba stated. “This complements our over 40-year presence in New York.”

He added that these efforts are part of a deliberate move to “reshape the competitive landscape.”

These international expansions, combined with the bank’s established presence in the UAE and United States, signal its growing ambition as Africa’s global bank.

UBA currently provides retail, commercial, and institutional banking to over 45 million customers worldwide. The Group employs more than 25,000 people across its operations.

From cutting-edge technology to improving financial inclusion, UBA prides itself on delivering innovation with purpose.

What do you think about UBA’s push into Saudi Arabia and France? Should it solidify on its African presence before venturing beyond the continent, or is this the right growth strategic move?
