2027: “I Support Southern Presidency, Not in Atiku’s Coalition” – Ortom

Former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, announced his intention to endorse a Southern candidate for the presidency in 2027.

He stressed that the South should complete its full eight-year tenure before any transition of power to the North.

In a conversation with reporters in Makurdi, Ortom, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), mentioned that he is not involved in the opposition coalition.

Rumours indicate that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar may run as the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Atiku has recently alluded to his presidential aspirations.

Firmly Supporting the South

Nonetheless, Ortom articulated his position clearly. “Up to this day, I, Ortom, stand by the idea of a southern presidency. Even if my party, PDP, is fielding a candidate for the presidency in 2027, that candidate must hail from the South. The South should be allowed to complete its eight years,”* he asserted.

Thus, I will not endorse a northern candidate.”

The former governor also reaffirmed his steadfast commitment to PDP, stating, “I continue to be a member and leader of the Peoples Democratic Party; I hold a board membership in my party and I do not support coalitions, but when a strategic partnership is necessary, you will find me involved.

In 2023, while still a member of the PDP, Mr Ortom did not hide his support for the then Labour Party’s candidate Peter Obi, also from the south. He did not indicate which candidate he will be pitching his tent with this time.

Ortom was one of the G5 governors led by Nyesom Wike, who revolted against their party in 2023.
