NAFDAC Alerts Public to Dangers of Bleaching Creams with Excess Hydroquinone

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised a red flag over skin-lightening creams containing high levels of hydroquinone.

In a strong warning, the agency cautioned Nigerians to avoid creams with hydroquinone above 2%.

NAFDAC’s Bauchi State Coordinator, Hamis Yahaya, issued the alert on Tuesday, July 2, 2025, during a media briefing in Bauchi.

He stated, “Applying creams with hydroquinone contents more than two per cent is harmful. Mixing creams by non-experts is wrong.”

Hydroquinone is widely used to lighten dark patches, age spots, and melasma.
But according to Yahaya, overuse can silently damage the skin and even cause cancer.

He explained, “Hydroquinone affects the health of the users gradually, including causing cancer.”

Melanin Is Natural Protection

Yahaya also reminded the public of the natural role melanin plays in protecting Black skin.

He said, “The black colour provides natural protection against harmful radiation due to melanin content.”

NAFDAC urged the public to respect the integrity of their skin. Using unapproved products or mixing creams at home could lead to long-term damage.

Yahaya appealed to journalists to support the agency’s efforts in raising awareness.

“The media must create awareness in order to stem down the use of cosmetics that would endanger the lives of consumers.”

He assured that NAFDAC will continue routine checks to remove unregistered or toxic products from the market.

The agency reiterated its commitment to protecting public health and encouraged Nigerians to stay away from unregulated skincare products.
