A Nigerian carer has been caught on CCTV violently mistreating an 88-year-old dementia patient just one day before he was found unresponsive and later died.
The carer, 42-year-old Bilikesu Olagunju, was seen in the footage dragging and threatening the frail pensioner, John Attard, during a 45-minute visit to his home in Bexley, Kent, on Christmas Eve 2022.
She had only worked six days on the job.
Olagunju was hired through Unique Personnel UK. She arrived to assist Mr. Attard with his morning routine, but what unfolded was deeply disturbing.
She stripped him, ignored his cries of pain, and even mocked him, telling him: “Maybe I will beat you up. I will flog you. I will call the police on you.”
CCTV Captures a Shocking Attack
The distressing moment was captured on a secret camera installed by Mr. Attard’s son, Chris Attard, who had grown worried about his father’s treatment.
The next day, Chris found his father unresponsive in bed, blood running down the side of his face.
He was rushed to hospital and never regained consciousness.
He died ten days later, with the family convinced the abuse hastened his death, though a post-mortem could not confirm a direct link.
“You Are Hurting Me,” the Old Man Said
Throughout the footage, the old man can be heard pleading: “You are hurting me.”
But Olagunju ignored him.
She dragged him by his collar, stripped him in full view of the street, and yanked him around as if he were weightless.
At one point, she poured marmalade into his coffee—despite knowing he was diabetic.
She even phoned her employer to say Mr. Attard had collapsed.
They advised her to call an ambulance and not to move him.
But she refused.
“A man should have been sent to do this job,” she complained, continuing to haul him up herself.
The Sentence That Enraged a Grieving Family
In court, Olagunju pleaded guilty to one count of ill-treating or willfully neglecting someone under her care.
At Woolwich Crown Court, she was given a six-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.

She was also ordered to carry out 50 hours of unpaid work.
Chris Attard called the sentence an insult.
“What kind of deterrent is that?” he asked in disbelief.
“If those cameras had not been there, that person could still be out there treating elderly people like this.”
“She Lifted Him Like a Rag Doll”
Chris told the court his father looked distorted with pain in the footage.
“She is physically trying to lift him like a rag doll,” he said.
“His face indicates the discomfort and pain he is feeling.”
“My head is banging,” the elderly man is heard saying.
Chris also read from a victim impact statement he wrote while his father was still in hospital.
“I am yet to discover the long-term effect this may have on my dad… Well, now I know – he never recovered.”
A Kind Man’s Final Days Tainted
Chris described his father as “kind-hearted, generous, compassionate, and funny.”
John Attard was a father of five, grandfather of eleven, and great-grandfather of seven.
“He was still enjoying what life he had left,” Chris said.
“It was Christmas morning when I found my 88-year-old father unresponsive in bed… the morning after he was physically and verbally assaulted by the very person entrusted to care for him.”
Looking directly at Olagunju in court, Chris said: “An autopsy could not link your actions to his death – but I feel personally that your actions, in part, contributed to his sudden death.”
