Bayelsa Governor Diri Orders Safe Rescue of Kidnapped Judge

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has directed security agencies to ensure the safe release of Justice Ebieyerin Omukoro, who was kidnapped by armed men in Yenagoa on Saturday.

He gave the order during a visit to Sagbama town as part of his local government thank-you tour to the Sagbama Local Government Area.

The governor disclosed that the kidnappers were captured on CCTV footage, adding that security operatives had already begun tracking their movements.

He assured residents that the government was determined to uncover the identities of the culprits and bring them to justice.

“From the minute I was informed about the high-profile kidnapping of a judge of the state high court, I summoned security commanders in the state and gave them directives to ensure that the judge came out alive and well,” Diri said.

Security Gadgets Will Help Track Kidnappers, Says Diri

Gov Diri warned those responsible for the abduction, including their sponsors, to abandon their criminal activities. He said Bayelsa State had invested heavily in security technology, including CCTV cameras, which had recorded the entire incident.

“Let me tell those who are either sponsors or involved in the kidnapping, it is time to give up. You cannot terrorise and intimidate your own people,” he said.

“Government has invested so much in the security sector, and the installed closed-circuit television cameras captured footage of the incident.”

He assured residents that his administration would not tolerate threats to public peace. He also urged community leaders to cooperate with security agencies to maintain law and order.

Diri and Deputy Governor Thank Voters for Re-election Support

During the visit, Mr Diri expressed gratitude to the people of Sagbama for their support in the November 11, 2023, governorship election, which secured his second term in office alongside his deputy.

He commended them for voting overwhelmingly for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He encouraged residents of Sagbama and Ekeremor Local Government Areas—both making up Bayelsa West Senatorial District—to stay united and foster peace within their communities.

In his remarks, Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo described Sagbama as the PDP’s political headquarters in the state. He noted that the area had consistently delivered the highest number of votes for the party in recent elections.

“Sagbama gave us what I call ‘Kano votes’ in both the 2019 and 2023 governorship elections,” Ewhrudjakpo said. “The people have always shown strong loyalty to the PDP.”

He thanked Senator Seriake Dickson, the former governor and current Senator representing Bayelsa West, for backing Senator Diri as his successor. Ewhrudjakpo said Sagbama would continue to support the Prosperity Government led by Diri.
