The Federal Government has dismissed the travel alert by the United States about security risks in Abuja. It insists that the city is safe for both residents and visitors.
The government issued this statement on Monday following an advisory released by the U.S. Mission in Nigeria.
The U.S. Embassy had warned its citizens against visiting military or government sites in Abuja for non-official reasons. It said the directive was based on growing global security concerns.
The advisory also barred U.S. Embassy staff and their families from making personal trips to these locations.
“Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, U.S. Mission Nigeria informs U.S. citizens that all U.S. Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time,” the mission stated.
But in a prompt reaction, the Nigerian Government rejected the advisory. It insisted that there was no active threat in the Federal Capital Territory.
Minister of Information Mohammed Idris said in a statement that Nigeria remains a secure destination.
“While the Federal Government recognizes and respects the right of foreign missions, including the U.S. Embassy, to issue travel advisories to their citizens, it is important to state categorically that Abuja remains safe for citizens, residents, and visitors alike,” he said.
He explained that security agencies are constantly monitoring the situation and working to keep residents protected. According to him, the country’s security systems have been effective in stopping possible threats.
“Nigeria’s security agencies are working around the clock to ensure the continued safety and protection of all residents of the FCT and across the country,” he added. “The current security architecture in Abuja has not only been proactive but has also recorded significant successes in detecting, preventing, and neutralizing threats.”
As of now, the U.S. Embassy and Consulate General are still open for business.
Nigerian authorities continue to assure the public that security forces are prepared and capable of responding to any developments.
