United States Senator Bernie Sanders has spoken out strongly against the recent military strikes launched by President Donald Trump on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Sanders compared the current developments to past U.S. military actions in Vietnam and Iraq, warning that a similar path could again lead to large-scale loss of lives, financial waste, and long-term instability.
Sanders said previous wars were justified with misleading claims and ended in human and economic disaster. He argued that America should focus inward, fixing issues like healthcare, education, and economic injustice, instead of engaging in yet another Middle East conflict.
In his statement released on Sunday, Sanders recalled how the Vietnam War, based on false information, cost over 58,000 American lives and millions of Vietnamese.
He also referenced the 2003 invasion of Iraq, accusing former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of helping sell a false narrative that Saddam Hussein was developing nuclear weapons.
“In 2002 we were told that we had to go to war against Iraq, that Iraq was building weapons of mass destruction,” Sanders said. “That war was based on a lie… The American people are being lied to again today.”
The senator pointed to the human cost of that war: 4,492 dead Americans, 32,000 wounded, and over 500,000 Iraqis killed. He said trillions of dollars were also wasted. Sanders added that the real danger lies in repeating that history under false pretenses again.
Calls for Impeachment and Constitutional Crisis
The U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites — Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan — also drew sharp criticism from domestic lawmakers and the international community.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York called the attack “a grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers.” She demanded Trump’s impeachment, saying “He has impulsively risked launching a war that may ensnare us for generations.”
She was not alone in voicing concern. Republican Representative Thomas Massie also said the action “is not Constitutional,” while Democrat Jim Himes of the House Intelligence Committee criticised Trump for failing to inform Congress in advance.
President Trump, however, insisted that the airstrikes were successful and necessary. He announced that American B-2 bombers had hit all three nuclear sites and returned safely. “All planes are safely on their way home,” he wrote. “Congratulations to our great American warriors.”
The escalating crisis has triggered a global response. Russia, China, and Pakistan have called for an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting. They are pushing for a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation of violence in the region.
