The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has raised the pump price of petrol to ₦915 per litre in Lagos and ₦945 in Abuja.
This sharp increase took effect on Monday and has drawn widespread concern among consumers and players in the oil sector.
In Lagos, the new price reflects a ₦45 jump from the previous ₦870 per litre. In Abuja, motorists now pay ₦945 per litre, up ₦35 from the earlier ₦910. The adjustment follows a recent price shift by
Dangote Refinery, which raised its ex-depot petrol rate to ₦880 per litre. That change came shortly before the refinery’s planned rollout of a national fuel and diesel supply network, scheduled to begin June 15.
Retailers Adjust to New Prices Amid Dangote’s Market Moves
Petrol stations across the country immediately implemented the revised pricing. At NNPC outlets in Badagry and Igando, Lagos, petrol was sold at ₦915 per litre. In Abuja’s Kubwa district, the price hit ₦945.
Independent and private stations also reacted swiftly. MRS, which partners with Dangote, increased its pump price to ₦925 from ₦875. TotalEnergies raised its rate to ₦910 per litre, up from ₦879. At Oluwafemi Arowolo Petroleum in Iba, Lagos, petrol sold for ₦920 per litre.
Dangote Refinery has also acquired 4,000 compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered tankers to support its logistics operation. This move has further signaled its intent to dominate the fuel distribution chain, raising fears of market control.
Marketers and Retailers Worried Over Domination
Industry bodies are concerned about the impact of Dangote’s growing control. The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) warned that this centralised model could damage competition and result in job losses across the downstream sector.
The Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) also called for clarity and oversight from regulatory authorities. The association noted that without proper checks, independent marketers could be pushed out, leaving the fuel market in fewer hands and limiting pricing fairness for consumers.
While the increase in pump price reflects changes in global oil markets and domestic refining efforts, the pace and scale of the hike have unsettled many Nigerians already dealing with rising costs of living.
