Gunmen attacked Oko community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State late Thursday night, killing multiple people in what police have described as a cult-related incident.
The attack occurred close to the Federal Polytechnic Oko and caused widespread panic as residents fled for safety.
Anambra State Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed that the violence stemmed from a fight between rival cult groups. He said two people were confirmed dead. However, eyewitnesses and local sources claim the number of victims is much higher.
Social media videos circulating after the incident show at least seven bodies with visible gunshot wounds. These clips have raised public alarm over the security situation in the state, especially in educational communities.
A staff member at the Federal Polytechnic Oko, who chose to remain anonymous, said two lecturers were abducted during the attack. Another staff member reportedly sustained bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
Police and School Management Respond
The institution’s spokesperson, Ibe Nzimako, addressed the incident and explained that the shootings took place off campus. He said one of the abducted persons was a lecturer and confirmed that no students were harmed.
Nzimako stated, “We are aware of the incident, but it did not happen inside the school. It occurred within the host community.”
Security officials have since begun investigating the matter and are searching for the gunmen. The state police command has also appealed to the public to remain calm and share useful information.
The latest violence comes just months after a deadly cult clash in Nibo community in October 2024, where more than ten people were reportedly killed. Authorities have blamed the rise in such attacks on the resurgence of cultism and gang rivalry among youths.
Tensions Grow Ahead of Governorship Election
The Oko killings come at a sensitive time for Anambra State. The town is only a few kilometres away from Isuofia, the hometown of the current governor, Professor Charles Soludo.
With political activities heating up ahead of November’s governorship election, there are fears that violence may escalate further.
Residents have expressed concern over what they see as growing lawlessness, especially near campuses and residential areas.
The state government is yet to issue an official statement.
