The Federal Government of Nigeria is making plans to evacuate Nigerians stranded in Israel and Iran. The decision follows escalating military conflict between the two Middle Eastern countries.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs made this announcement late Tuesday, June 18. The ministry said Nigerian embassies in Tel Aviv and Tehran have begun reaching out to Nigerian citizens living in both countries.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform that following the escalation of the crisis between the State of Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Federal Government is finalising arrangements for the emergency evacuation of stranded Nigerians in both countries,” the statement said.
According to the ministry, both Nigerian missions are working to locate citizens, register them, and organise travel arrangements. Those who have not yet registered were advised to quickly do so.
Nigerian Missions in Tel Aviv and Tehran Begin Evacuation Coordination
Nigerians living in affected areas were told to stay calm and follow security guidelines provided by local authorities. The government advised them to stay in touch with the nearest Nigerian embassy for updates.
The ministry praised embassy staff in Israel and Iran for their efforts during this tense period. “The Ministry commends the efforts put in place by our Missions in Tel Aviv, Israel, and Tehran, Iran, for their dedication and commitment to reaching out to the Nigerian community in these difficult times,” the statement added.
In addition to working with Nigerian officials, the government said it was also partnering with international agencies to ensure a smooth and safe evacuation.
The Federal Government expressed deep concern over the worsening conflict. It called on both Israel and Iran to stop fighting and return to peaceful dialogue.
“Nigeria reiterates its call for the immediate cessation of hostilities and urges all parties involved to embrace dialogue, respect international humanitarian law and prioritise the protection of civilians,” the statement read.
Military Strikes, Rising Deaths, and Warnings of Wider War
This announcement comes just days after Israel launched a deadly military strike on Iran. Reports say that close to 100 targets were hit in a single day. The attack killed several top Iranian military commanders, including General Mohammad Bagheri, head of the Iranian Armed Forces, and Hossein Salami, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Iran reacted swiftly. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei described the Israeli action as a “declaration of war.” He promised a “bitter and painful” retaliation. Iran’s military has vowed an “unlimited” response.
The situation has put the entire region on edge. Many countries are now racing to protect their citizens. Nigeria joins other nations in calling for restraint and respect for human life.
Several countries are taking sides, and there’s a palpable fear that the conflict could potentially lead to a global conflagration if not nipped in the bud.
