The Labour Party (LP) says the internal conflict within the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a case of political karma. The LP made this comment after the APC North-East stakeholders’ summit in Gombe ended in chaos on Sunday, June 15.
The event turned sour when some APC leaders declared support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term ambition. They failed to mention Vice-President Kashim Shettima, causing protests and disruption among delegates. Many felt the omission was intentional and disrespectful.
The Labour Party’s caretaker committee chairperson, Nenadi Usman, said on Tuesday, June 17, that the drama at the summit mirrored the president’s own recent comments about opposition parties. A few days before the summit, President Tinubu had mocked political opponents, saying, “It is a pleasure to watch them in disarray.”
Usman said the Gombe summit chaos was a direct result of such mockery. In her words, “Today, we witness the irony of history in motion. Just days after the president’s unguarded and undemocratic remarks, his own party, the APC, has descended into a public crisis in the North East.”
APC Accused of Ignoring Democratic Values
Usman went further to criticise the ruling APC for allegedly trying to force one political agenda on everyone. She said the APC ignored democratic norms and treated even their vice president with disrespect.
“In their reckless bid to enforce a one-person agenda without regard for process, respect, or even the dignity of their own Vice President, the APC has exposed the rot at the core of their politics,” she stated.
She added that the anger expressed in the North-East showed that the party was no longer united. According to her, the members’ protest against the endorsement shows internal cracks that the public can now see clearly.
Usman described the events as more than mere irony. “This is not poetic justice. It is political karma. What President Tinubu wished for others has turned to plague his own political household,” she said.
She also criticised Tinubu’s earlier comments, saying they go against the spirit of democracy. “A president who celebrates the weakening of opposition is, by extension, celebrating the weakening of democracy itself,” Usman said.
She called on Nigerians to defend democracy by supporting open opposition. She stressed that democratic systems need healthy criticism and alternative voices.
The LP interim boss urged political leaders to protect the freedom of opposition parties instead of mocking them or trying to shut them out. She said that a functioning democracy cannot exist without room for dissent and debate.
