A plane carrying 242 people crashed into a residential area shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport in India. The aircraft was on its way to Gatwick, London, and had 232 passengers and 12 crew members onboard.
Videos shared online showed thick smoke rising near the airport, with emergency responders quickly arriving at the scene.
The crash occurred around 1:38 pm local time, just five minutes after departure. The aircraft fell outside the airport’s perimeter and hit the Meghani Nagar area, which is densely populated.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang followed by flames and smoke. Emergency teams carried injured individuals on stretchers to waiting ambulances. Several hospitals in the city have since confirmed receiving multiple casualties.
Emergency Response Underway as Officials Confirm Incident
India’s civil aviation minister, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, said he was “shocked and devastated” by the tragedy.
“Rescue teams have been mobilised, and all efforts are being made to ensure medical aid and relief support are being rushed to the site,” he said. He added that he is monitoring the situation and coordinating the response from relevant agencies. “My thoughts and prayers are with all those on board and their families,” he said.




Air India, which operated Flight AI171, confirmed the incident in a statement. It said the flight from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick was “involved in an incident today” and that further updates would be provided as soon as possible.
Gatwick Airport also confirmed that the aircraft was expected to land at 6:25 pm local time in London.

This tragic event is the first-ever crash of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner since the model began flying in 2011. The Dreamliner is known for its fuel efficiency, wide-body design, and use of composite materials.
With over five million commercial flights completed in 14 years, it has built a strong safety reputation.
A full investigation into the cause of the crash is expected, which could include examination of the plane’s engines, systems, and airframe integrity.
