Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has donated ₦300 million to support victims of the recent flood disaster in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State. The flooding, which happened earlier this month, claimed the lives of over 200 people and displaced thousands more.
Entire communities lost their homes, farmlands were washed away, and families were left struggling without access to food, clean water, and other essentials.
Governor Zulum led a delegation from Borno State on Tuesday to Government House in Minna. He met with Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, to express condolences and show solidarity with the government and people of Niger State.
Zulum described the situation as heartbreaking and said the funds were to assist the victims and strengthen the efforts already being made by the Niger State Government.
“It is time for subnational governments to work collectively to mitigate the impact of climate change, which is contributing to these disasters,” he said.
Climate Change and Flooding: A National Challenge
Zulum urged the Federal Government to step up and develop a solid framework to tackle recurring natural disasters like floods. He called for long-term solutions to reduce the devastating effects of climate change across Nigeria. His visit was not just about the donation but also a call for stronger cooperation among Nigerian states.
Zulum also noted that climate-related disasters such as floods are becoming more frequent and intense. He said states need to prepare by investing in early warning systems, proper drainage, and emergency relief structures.
While the Borno delegation met local officials, residents in Mokwa continued cleaning up debris and searching for missing family members. Several temporary camps have been set up for the displaced, but many families still lack food and medical support. Local leaders say the road to recovery will be long.
Bago Commends Zulum’s Compassion and Urges Public Awareness
In his response, Niger State Governor Umaru Bago thanked Zulum for the generous donation and said it would make a real difference for the affected families. He praised Zulum for standing by Niger State in such a difficult moment.
“This is a timely and true demonstration of solidarity and brotherhood,” Bago said.
He also pointed out the deep historical and cultural ties between Borno and Niger states. Bago said Zulum’s courage and kindness continue to inspire leaders across the country.
He promised that the ₦300 million will be used to provide immediate relief and support ongoing efforts to resettle those who lost their homes. He added that education campaigns would be launched to warn residents about the dangers of building homes in flood-prone areas.
According to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, over 20,000 people were displaced in the flood. Experts say the rainy season is expected to bring more downpours, making proactive measures more important than ever.
