The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has received a chieftaincy title in Enugu. She was honoured with the title Ugosimba 1 of Enugu, which means “an eagle from a neighbour’s land” in Igbo.
The traditional rulers of Enugu State conferred the title on her during a two-day working visit to the South-East region.
The ceremony took place on Tuesday and brought together state officials, community leaders, political figures, and women’s groups. It was colourful, full of traditional performances and heartfelt speeches.
The honour recognised her dedication to women empowerment, support for healthcare workers, and humanitarian contributions across the country.
Traditional Leaders Praise Tinubu’s Service and Kindness
The Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council presented the chieftaincy title to Mrs. Tinubu, led by their chairman, HRM Igwe Ikechukwu Asadu. While addressing the gathering, the royal father praised her for her active years in the Senate and her service to Nigeria.
“Our First Lady served in the senate for three consecutive terms and was honoured with the Commander of the Order of the Niger, CON. Nobody could say you were silent at the parliament,” he said.
He added that her acts of kindness to vulnerable groups stood out. “We are thanking you for what you do for the midwives, for the nurses. Personally, I am a nurse too. I appreciate it when it comes to the less privileged, healing the sick, clothing the naked, feeding the hungry. So, we are here to recognise and appreciate all these good works you are doing. It’s only God that can pay you for your good work,” he said.
Oluremi Tinubu Expresses Gratitude and Affection for Enugu
Senator Tinubu was visibly touched by the warm welcome and honour. She said she felt a deep sense of peace since arriving in Enugu on Monday. She expressed her gratitude to the people and royal fathers of the state.
“Thank you so much for all the support you have given. Today is indeed a great honour to me personally and also to my family. I love your state; it is such a very peaceful state and a very peaceful ambience,” she said.
She added that the honour was also for her husband, President Bola Tinubu, and their children. “I want to thank Your Majesties for this honour done to me and also to my husband as well; and I know he will be very delighted and I believe the children too will be delighted,” she said.
The First Lady noted that although she had received other chieftaincy titles in the past, this one stood out as something very meaningful. “It is not that I have not been given titles, but this one is quite special and I believe it is God-ordained. And as you have honoured me today, Enugu State will know it for good,” she said.
She promised to always remember the love shown to her and hinted at more positive developments ahead. “This moment will remain special in my heart and I will always remember your people for good and for the honour you have done for me. And this is not the end because our tomorrow is here already,” she concluded.
