A senior naval officer, Lt. Commodore M. Buba, was killed in the early hours of Sunday in the Kawo area of Kaduna State. He was a student at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji.
Police said he was stabbed by a suspected phone thief after refusing to surrender his mobile phone.
The incident happened around 5:20 a.m. near the Kawo flyover. The officer had a flat tyre and was attempting to change it when he was attacked.
Attacker Killed by Mob, Officer Dies at Hospital
According to the Kaduna State Police Command, the attacker approached the officer while he was fixing his tyre. He demanded for his phone. When the officer refused, the attacker stabbed him in the chest with a knife.
“He questioned the attacker’s demand, and that’s when he was stabbed with a locally-made knife,” police said.
People nearby quickly gathered, overpowered the suspect, and killed him on the spot. The wounded officer was rushed to Manaal Hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival.
Police officers who arrived at the scene secured the area and took the officer’s body for further investigation.
Police Arrest 13 with Weapons After Raiding Kawo
After the killing, police launched a targeted raid in the Kawo area. During the operation, 13 suspects were arrested. The suspects were found in possession of knives and other dangerous weapons.
The police said they would investigate the involvement of each suspect in violent crimes in the area. The raid aimed to restore calm and prevent further attacks.
Kaduna residents have expressed concern over rising street crime and violence. Many urged authorities to improve patrols and ensure better safety for citizens and military personnel.
The police assured residents that they are working to secure the area. “We are committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property in Kaduna,” said the police spokesperson.
