The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a public holiday to celebrate this year’s Democracy Day.
This announcement was made in a statement on Sunday by the Ministry of Interior. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, conveyed the message on behalf of the government.
He congratulated Nigerians and praised the country’s 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance. According to him, this progress shows the resilience and unity of Nigeria.
“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, peace is sustained, and our future assured,” said Tunji-Ojo.
He said the country’s democratic story is built on “resilience, strength, and courage,” and that there is “renewed hope for a brighter future.”
Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to democratic ideals. He said the government will always respect the will of the people.
“Democracy is sustained with open doors for further improvement,” he added.
June 12: A Day of Reflection and National Honour
June 12 was officially declared Democracy Day to honour the June 12, 1993, presidential election. Many Nigerians regard that poll as the most credible in the nation’s history.
The election was won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola. However, it was annulled by the then-military ruler, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (retd), which led to a long struggle for the return of civilian rule.
Democracy Day reminds Nigerians of the sacrifices made by activists and citizens who fought for freedom, fair elections, and good governance.
This year, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will deliver a special address to a joint session of the Senate and the House of Representatives at the National Assembly in Abuja.
According to an internal memo from the House Clerk, Yahaya Danzaria, shared by House Spokesman Akin Rotimi, the joint sitting will begin at 11:00 AM. The President is expected to arrive by 12:00 noon.
The theme of the 2025 celebration is: “26 years of democracy: Renewing our commitment to national development.”
President Tinubu will be the Special Guest of Honour at the event.
The programme will include goodwill messages from former leaders of the National Assembly. The President will also confer National Honours on select lawmakers.
“This joint sitting represents a significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” the statement added.
It also noted that the session highlights the National Assembly’s role in promoting democracy, transparency, and progress since 1999.
The House of Representatives advised Nigerians to mark the day with “reflection, renewed patriotism, and commitment to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united nation.”
