What Really Happened in Paul Adefarasin’s Viral Lagos Traffic Video

Senior Pastor of House on the Rock Church, Paul Adefarasin, has broken his silence after a viral video showed him with an object believed to be a firearm.

In the short clip, Pastor Adefarasin was spotted inside a black Range Rover in Lagos traffic. A car enthusiast, known as a spotter, had been filming luxury vehicles when he noticed the SUV.

The pastor rolled down his tinted window and appeared to display what looked like a pistol. The moment caused the startled spotter to quickly apologize, saying, “Boss, boss, sorry sir, sorry sir.”

The brief exchange left social media users debating whether a popular pastor should be moving around with what appeared to be a weapon.

Viral Reaction and Pastor Adefarasin’s Official Response

The video spread quickly online, drawing widespread criticism and concern. Many Nigerians questioned why a religious leader would carry a gun in public, especially while engaging with strangers on the road.

However, Pastor Adefarasin has now addressed the controversy. In a public statement, he explained what happened.

“Dear Family, trusting that this meets you well, winning and on top of the tests of life,” the statement began.

“You might be aware of a video which has been circulating on social media showing me in what some have misunderstood as brandishing a firearm.”

Pastor Adefarasin went on to clarify the object seen in his hand.

“I want to assure you of this — that, that was certainly not a firearm, and at no point did I point such at anyone.”

He added that more clarification would be provided during the church’s 9:00 am service.

“We understand the concern that this accusation may have caused, and we will speak briefly to this mischief during the 9:00 am service tomorrow. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

The church has not yet released any further comment or video from the upcoming service as of the time of writing.

Concerns Over Security and Public Image of Clerics

The incident has once again ignited controversy about how Nigerian pastors present themselves in public.

Clerics and public figures have faced threats, robberies, and even kidnappings in recent times. This could explain why some may carry self-defence items, whether real or symbolic.

However, possession of firearms without a proper license is outlawed in Nigeria. It is unclear what the object in Pastor Adefarasin’s hand truly was, and no official security agency has yet made a statement.

It will be interesting to hear the explanation from the revered church leader on Sunday, June 8, as promised.
