The death toll from the recent flooding in Niger State has risen to at least 150 people. This follows days of torrential rainfall that devastated the Mokwa Local Government Area.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the sharp rise from 115 after rescue workers recovered more bodies. Some were found nearly 10 kilometres away from Mokwa town, swept downstream by the powerful floodwaters.
The disaster has displaced more than 3,000 people. Over 250 houses have been destroyed, and two major bridges washed away. Officials say many victims are still missing.
According to NEMA, entire families have been affected. “A family of 12 lost eight members,” an agency official said. “Only four have been accounted for so far.”
President Tinubu Activates National Emergency Response Centre
President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sadness over the flooding and the loss of lives. In a statement, he directed the immediate activation of the National Emergency Response Centre.
“I have received with deep concern the distressing reports of severe flooding in Mokwa,” Tinubu said. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the affected families and the good people of Niger State.”
The President also confirmed that relief materials and temporary shelters were being deployed urgently. He assured that the federal government would support all those affected by the disaster.
“We will ensure that no Nigerian affected by this disaster is left behind or unheard of,” he said.
NEMA Warns Against Building on Waterways
NEMA has warned that building homes on waterways remains dangerous. The agency said the destruction in Mokwa shows why drainage paths and river routes must stay clear.
The rains began late Wednesday and continued through Thursday. The downpour flooded dozens of homes and submerged large parts of Mokwa.

Some residents said they had no place to go. “We don’t have anywhere again to go to,” one woman said as she stood near the remains of her house.
NEMA rescue teams say they need heavy-duty machines to retrieve bodies trapped under debris. Others have been swept far into the Niger River, making recovery difficult.
Federal Agencies Mobilised for Support and Recovery
President Tinubu confirmed that federal agencies and the military were helping with rescue efforts. He promised a fast and compassionate response.
“We will continue to coordinate with the Niger State Government,” he said. “Our response will prioritise lives, restore dignity, and accelerate recovery.”
The President also urged Nigerians to pray for the victims and remain united. “In times of adversity, we draw strength from our unity, resilience, and shared humanity.”
Search-and-rescue operations continue, and more updates are expected from the response centre.
