The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the results of the 2025 resit of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The resit was ordered after JAMB discovered technical and human errors during the initial exam. These issues affected candidates mostly in Lagos and the South-East states.
After the resit, over 200,000 more candidates scored 200 and above out of 400. This means a major improvement from the initial results released on May 9.
Originally, more than 1.5 million of the 1.9 million candidates had scored below 200.
JAMB said the resit results show a better performance rate. It said that “565,988 candidates, accounting for 29.3%, scored 200 and above”. This is better than the 24% recorded in 2024 and 23.36% in 2023.
Resit Results Show Rising Trend in UTME Performance
JAMB reported that 1,931,467 candidates took part in the 2025 UTME. This is more than the 1,842,364 who sat for the exam in 2024. Only 0.46% of candidates scored 300 and above this year, up from 0.35% in 2023.
For scores of 250 and above, 117,373 candidates reached this level in 2025. This is higher than 77,070 in 2024 and 56,736 in 2023.
The board said the resit brought down the number of candidates who scored below 200 to 1,365,479. “This means about 200,000 more candidates crossed the average score mark after the resit,” JAMB noted.
The board also confirmed that the technical problems were caused by server issues that disrupted the upload of candidate responses in the first three days of the exam.
JAMB Clears Air on Cancelled Results and Fake Claims
JAMB clarified that there were no high scorers in the cancelled sessions. It said, “Only a handful scored up to 217 in the affected sessions, while 99% scored below 200 marks.”
The board warned against false claims. It pointed out a case where a student, Olisa Gabriel Chukwuemeka, claimed he scored 326. But his real score was 180. He later deleted his social media account after the truth came out.
JAMB said, “This claim incited public outrage against the Board and was entirely fabricated.” It urged candidates not to be misled by false information shared online.
JAMB Vows to Punish Exam Cheats
JAMB said results of candidates who were found guilty of exam malpractice have been withdrawn. These candidates will also face further investigation. It added that “Candidates affected by the withdrawal are being notified through text messages on their registered lines, their profiles and emails.”
The board also warned the public that it does not profit from the ₦50 text message fee used to check results. The system, it said, is to prevent cybercafé fraud.
JAMB expressed concern about rising digital exam fraud. It said “Our future is being put in jeopardy by advanced levels of digitalised fraud.”
