Political activist Inibehe Effiong has taken Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno to the cleaners for donating brand-new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado vehicles to National Assembly members from the state during a time of great hardship and suffering for ordinary people.

Effiong expressed outrage over the governor’s decision, calling it “nothing but madness rooted in corruption and political desperation.” He criticized the move, arguing that while “people are hungry and jobless,” the governor was “busy dissipating resources on frivolities.”

Governor Eno, elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has led Akwa Ibom since 2023. Reports suggest he is considering defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that has fueled speculation about his political ambitions.

Public Reaction to the Vehicle Donations

Effiong accused politicians of neglecting the people while enriching themselves. “Akwa Ibom people are sleeping while politicians are wrecking the state,” he said.

He questioned whether anyone had checked the state’s unemployment rate, arguing that the government should focus on economic development instead of luxury gifts.

He pointed out that National Assembly members already receive official vehicles from the government.

“They are all living ostentatiously, but a governor who hasn’t been able to achieve anything meaningful in the last two years decided that it was sensible to donate expensive vehicles to them,” he stated.

Concerns Over Education and Governance

Effiong also criticized the state’s handling of education, claiming that public schools are failing while government funds are being misused. “Public education has collapsed, but he is wasting our money recklessly,” he said.

He questioned the continued defence of government actions, saying, “Something is fundamentally wrong with Umo Eno. For how long will our people continue to defend and close their eyes to the criminal enterprise that they call government?”

Recently, Effiong opposed complimentary remarks made by Gov. Eno about the policies of the federal government under President Tinubu. Eno appears to be preparing to defect to the ruling party.

Inibehe Effiong is a human rights lawyer, outspoken for good governance and in support of the downtrodden. He hails from Uyo in Akwa Ibom State.
