Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has declared his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. His decision comes despite his father’s recent defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Bello, a member of the House of Representatives for Kaduna North, attended the APC National Summit in Abuja on Thursday. At the event, Tinubu was endorsed as the party’s sole candidate for the 2027 election.
His father, Nasir El-Rufai, has jettisoned the APC he helped found, saying the party has missed its way under Tinubu and no longer aligns with his values. He joined the SDP and is assiduously working to form a potent coalition to unseat the APC in 2027.
Reactions to Bello’s Decision
Bello’s support for Tinubu has drawn mixed reactions. Activist Reno Omokri mocked the situation, saying, “If El-Rufai can’t convince his son to leave Tinubu, how will he convince Nigerians?”
The political divide within the El-Rufai family deepened last year when another son, Bashir, criticised Tinubu and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani on social media.
Bashir predicted that Tinubu and Sani would lose in 2027. He also claimed that the probe into his father over alleged mismanagement of ₦423 billion was politically motivated.
He tweeted, “Nobody is too big to be ‘elected out of office’ by the people. It will happen & wallahi nothing will happen. So forget all these intimidations flying up and down. Let us be patient.”
With the three scions of the El-Rufai family taking different political paths, there is sure to be both joy and sadness in the family post-election in 2027.
