The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has strongly criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) for endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its sole presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, just two years into his current tenure.
This early endorsement, announced by some APC leaders, has triggered reactions from opposition parties and ordinary Nigerians facing increasing economic hardship.
In a public statement, CUPP’s National Secretary, Peter Ameh, described the decision as premature and driven by fear of public rejection. “This adoption does not reflect the will of the Nigerian people, whose votes will ultimately decide the election,” he said.
He continued: “It stems from fear of rejection by an electorate burdened by economic hardship.”
Ameh said the APC appears to be more focused on power retention than addressing the real issues affecting citizens. Many Nigerians are still struggling with rising food prices, high inflation, low income, and poor access to basic amenities.
The CUPP said Nigerians should not be distracted by early political maneuvering but instead focus on demanding good governance and accountability from the current administration.
Opposition Warns Against Rigging Plans in 2027
The CUPP also warned against any attempt to manipulate the outcome of the 2027 elections. Ameh said the early endorsement shows APC leaders fear a fair contest at the ballot.
“We call on all Nigerians to stay vigilant in defending our democracy. The 2027 elections will be a defining moment, and the people’s will must not be subverted,” he said.
Observers say the APC endorsement comes at a time when many Nigerians are questioning the performance of the federal government in key areas such as security, infrastructure, healthcare, and employment.
As political activities heat up ahead of 2027, Nigerians are calling for transparency and a level playing field for all parties.
