The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has officially received a 753-unit housing estate in Abuja. The property was formerly owned by Godwin Emefiele, the embattled former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) transferred the estate to the Ministry at its headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja. The handover marks another step in the government’s anti-corruption efforts.
Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, praised the EFCC for its commitment to asset recovery.
“This marks a significant milestone in our determination to ensure that recovered assets benefit Nigerians directly,” Dangiwa stated.
Government Plans for the Estate
The Ministry, in collaboration with the EFCC, will conduct a familiarization tour to assess the estate’s condition. Officials will inspect buildings and infrastructure to ensure they are safe and suitable for habitation.
“We intend to carry out thorough integrity and structural assessments to confirm their safety,” Dangiwa said.
The government plans to sell the housing units to the public and use some for special government needs.
“For public sales, we will adopt a transparent and competitive process, including nationwide advertisement and the Renewed Hope Portal for applications,” he added.
EFCC Chairman Olanipekun Olukoyede emphasized the importance of making recovered assets useful.
“It is important to show Nigerians that recovered proceeds of crime will be applied transparently so they are not looted again,” Olukoyede said.
