There are growing speculations that Peter Obi may team up again with Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election.

Obi was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023. Atiku was the flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the same election. Now, both leaders may be forming another alliance, this time to unseat President Bola Tinubu.
Obi and Atiku May Reunite for 2027 Race
Several online sources claim that Obi and Atiku met earlier this year in the United Kingdom. Atiku reportedly offered Obi the position of vice president on a single-term joint ticket.
Atiku has promised to serve only one term of four years if elected. After that, he plans to back Peter Obi in 2031.
According to the grapevines, “Obi has accepted the offer, and Atiku is ready to make it official. They plan to sign a written agreement if needed.”
Obi is now said to be consulting with his close supporters and party loyalists. He wants their approval before any official announcement is made.
Opposition Coalition Aims to Defeat Tinubu
On March 20, Atiku, Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and other top politicians reportedly met in Abuja. They declared plans to form a coalition to challenge President Tinubu in the 2027 election.
Since that announcement, both the PDP and Labour Party have been facing internal crises. Some finger the government, but behind the scenes, talks have continued.
A party insider explained, “The leaders believe only a strong coalition led by Atiku and Obi can defeat Tinubu. So, they are working quietly to finalise the plan.”
The insider added that most parties are expected to unveil their presidential candidates by May 2026. So, the opposition leaders want to act fast and seal the alliance.
In 2022, Obi left the PDP when the party could not get itself to cede the presidential ticket to the South East, where Obi comes from, as was widely expected, according to the informal rotational arrangement. He then joined the Labour Party in 2022, where he gained massive support among young voters, in an election his supporters still insist he won.
Now, both leaders may be coming together again—this time with a clear succession plan and an agenda to rescue the nation from years of economic decline and sociopolitical malady.
