Wike Rules Out 2027 Presidential Bid, Backs Tinubu for Re-Election

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, says he will not contest the 2027 presidential election. He made this clear in an interview published by BBC Pidgin.

Wike said there is no politician in the country strong enough to defeat President Bola Tinubu in 2027. He stated his loyalty to the president and ruled out any political ambition that could create conflict between them.

“I will not contest again. I cannot contest against someone I am working with. Who will win except him?” he asked.

Wike’s remarks come as discussions within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continue over zoning the 2027 presidential ticket to the South. The move is aimed at giving the party a better fighting chance against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Wike lost the 2022 PDP presidential primary to Atiku Abubakar, who went on to be the party’s flagbearer in the 2023 election. He ditched Atiku to pitch his tent with rival APC – a decision that earned him the powerful ministerial portfolio.

Wike Criticises PDP Leaders, Calls Party Weak

While speaking on the crisis rocking the PDP, Wike expressed disappointment in the actions of some party members. He accused them of being arrogant and lacking real political weight.

“You are in the opposition; the opposition does not show impunity. The opposition does not show arrogance. It is the ruling party that shows impunity and arrogance because they are in power,” he said.

Wike criticised PDP chieftains like Achike Udenwa and Sam Egwu. He questioned their political relevance and accused them of empty threats.

“Who is in the PDP? Achike Udenwa, former governor of Imo. He does not have one assembly member. He does not have one national assembly member, and did not give his party 3% of the vote, yet he is threatening.”

“Saba Egu, former governor of Ebonyi, he does not have one assembly member. He does not have one national assembly member. You did not produce a governor. What are you threatening about? You are empty. What are you threatening?” Wike said.

Wike’s strong statements reflect his ongoing disagreement with some PDP leaders and his closer ties with the current APC-led government.
