The Nzuko Odinani Welfare Association, a group of traditionalists in Anambra State, has promised to expose native doctors who prepare charms for criminals.
The group said some traditional medicine practitioners now assist kidnappers, robbers, and other lawbreakers with charms and rituals.
“We will help identify and expose these people working against peace,” said Dikeato Izuegbu, chairman of the group.
He spoke during a courtesy visit to the Anambra State Police Commissioner, Mr. Ikioye Orutugu.
The group also pledged to work closely with security agencies to clean up the practice of traditional medicine.
“We want to remove the bad eggs,” Izuegbu said. “Not all native doctors support crime.”
According to him, the association believes in justice and good morals.
Group wants better security in Anambra
The police, in a statement by their spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the visit.
He said the group came to the Police Headquarters in Awka last Wednesday.
Ikenga explained that the Police Commissioner assured the group of support and collaboration. “The police will partner with the group to solve social issues tied to traditions and cultural practices,” Ikenga said.
The commissioner believes that proper understanding of native customs will help police do their job better.
“Respect for local traditions can build trust and help us police communities more effectively,” Orutugu reportedly said.
Traditional beliefs remain important in many parts of Anambra and Nigeria.
Some traditionalists act as spiritual guides or herbal healers. But others have been accused of preparing charms for criminals or even performing human rituals.
In recent years, Anambra State has seen rising crime, especially kidnappings and cult clashes.
Security experts say combining modern policing with traditional cooperation could help reduce crime.
“We welcome their support,” Ikenga said. “The goal is to protect lives and property.”
