Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo has cleared the air about his political future.
He dismissed claims that he plans to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) following President Bola Tinubu’s visit on May 1.
Speaking at a thanksgiving Mass in Onitsha on Sunday, May 4, Soludo said he’s not leaving the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
“Even after my tenure, another progressive leader will take over under the APGA platform—and nothing else,” Soludo said.
He was addressing guests at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church during an event held in honour of APGA’s National Chairman, Barrister Sylvester Ezeokenwa.
Soludo reminded everyone of the party’s history.
“APGA is the first officially registered progressive political party in Nigeria since 2002, and it remains our own,” he said.
Visible Progress in Anambra
The governor praised the party’s work over the years, especially in Anambra.
“Under APGA, Anambra has experienced unprecedented development,” he said.
He named Peter Obi, Willie Obiano, and himself as governors who moved the state forward under APGA.
“Within just three years of our administration, the results are visible for all to see,” Soludo said.
Since taking office in 2022, Soludo has focused on infrastructure, education, and health care. Several road projects are ongoing across local governments.
His government also launched free antenatal care and improved school feeding programs.
Anambra remains one of the few states in Nigeria where a non-mainstream party still holds power.
Ezeokenwa Grateful for Soludo’s Support During Legal Battle
Barrister Sylvester Ezeokenwa got emotional while speaking at the thanksgiving.
He thanked Soludo for standing by him during a tough legal battle over the APGA national leadership.
“I remain eternally grateful to Governor Charles Soludo, who stood by me through thick and thin,” he said.
The Supreme Court on November 27, 2024, ruled in favour of Ezeokenwa as the rightful APGA chairman.
He also thanked Bishop Jonas Benson and Rev Fr Ezeoke for their spiritual support.
Other guests at the event included Anambra First Lady Mrs Nonye Soludo, Commissioner for Information Dr Law Mefor, and Commissioners Dr Afam Ben Obidike and Engr Felix Odimegwu.
Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, an APGA aspirant for the Anambra South Senatorial bye-election, praised the Supreme Court’s verdict.
“This landmark decision is a testament to the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice is served,” he said.
The event ended with a message of unity and growth for APGA.
