Nigeria Declares May 1 as Public Holiday for Workers’ Day 2025

The Federal Government has officially declared Thursday, May 1, 2025, as a public holiday in honor of this year’s Workers’ Day celebration.

.The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo said the government acknowledged the crucial role workers play in national development, stating that their dedication and diligence have significantly contributed to Nigeria’s global standing.

“There is dignity in labour; the dedication and commitment to the work we do is vital to nation-building,” he said..

The minister urged Nigerian workers to adopt a culture of innovation and productivity in their respective fields. He further encouraged them to strive for excellence in their trade, emphasizing the need for continuous improvement to enhance governance and maximize the nation’s wealth for all citizens.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo reassured Nigerians that the current administration is committed to ensuring the security and well-being of citizens and foreigners alike. “This Administration is fully committed to the security of life and property of every citizen and foreigners in the country,” he said.

The minister extended his wishes for a happy celebration, reminding workers to keep faith in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

May Day, the annual holiday recognizing the international working class, is celebrated around the world on May 1. It commemorates the struggle for workers’ rights and honors the lives’ lost during the fight to ensure the 8-hour workday we are now accustomed to.
