The Federal Government is bringing back the school feeding program. Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, announced this on Wednesday in Abuja.

“The relaunch marks President Tinubu’s second year in office,” Sununu said. “We aim to fight child hunger and improve education nationwide.”

The plan is simple: feed schoolchildren daily with nutritious meals made from local ingredients. Officials hope this will boost learning while supporting farmers.

“The goal is to reach 10 million children,” Sununu explained. “We expect school enrolment to rise by 20% and performance by 15% by 2025.”

He stressed the need for transparency and teamwork to keep the program running successfully.

Fighting Malnutrition and Poverty

Food insecurity affects millions. The government says it will help cut malnutrition, keep kids in school, and empower local communities.

Dr. Aderemi Adebowale, who leads the program, confirmed ₦100 billion has been set aside in the 2025 budget. “This will help expand the program and strengthen community involvement,” she noted.

To track progress, officials are introducing QR-coded supply chains and real-time monitoring. The focus is also on helping women and youth through farming and food preparation.

“Nutrition experts will check food quality and assess student health,” Adebowale stated. “We want to reduce rural poverty by 40%.”

Stakeholders, including private firms like Tetra Pak and development agencies, have pledged their support.

The initiative is also working with the National Identity Management Commission to register and track beneficiaries.

Dr. Badamasi Lawal, CEO of NSIPA, called the project a milestone. Represented by Dr. Binta Musa, he urged everyone to help secure a better future for Nigerian children.

The meeting ended with a call for strategic partnerships to align the program with Sustainable Development Goals.

The school feeding program was introduced by former President Muhammadu Buhari, but was riddled with complaints ranging from inadequacy and corruption.
