Bolt Engages Drivers Over Planned Lagos Strike

Bolt, Nigeria’s largest ride-hailing platform, is open to discussions with app-based drivers planning a strike over poor earnings and working conditions.

“We are actively engaging with driver representatives to understand their needs and find solutions through open and constructive dialogue,” said Osi Oguah, General Manager of Bolt Nigeria.

The Lagos chapter of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) announced the strike for May 1, International Workers’ Day.

The union claims ride-hailing operators, including Bolt, Uber, and In Drive, have ignored repeated calls for fair compensation and better working conditions.

“Our goal has always been to create a platform that is fair, transparent, and beneficial for all stakeholders,” Oguah added.

AUATON insists its attempts to negotiate have been met with indifference. The group accuses companies of prioritising profits over drivers’ welfare.

The strike could disrupt transport across Lagos, Nigeria’s busiest city. With thousands of app-based drivers participating, commuters may face challenges finding rides.

Bolt entered Nigeria’s market in 2016, changing the ride-hailing industry with its technology-driven platform. By 2025, the company had facilitated over 250 million rides nationwide.
