Oborevwori Joins APC: What the Defection Means for Politics in Delta and South-South Nigeria

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It is the first time in 25 years that a sitting Delta governor is switching sides from PDP, the state’s long-time ruling party.

“This decision was reached after broad consultations with party leaders and political stakeholders across the state,” said Charles Aniagwu, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information.

He spoke to journalists shortly after a closed-door meeting at the Government House in Asaba.

At the high-level meeting were some of the biggest names in Delta politics. Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa attended. He was also the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.

Also present were several state and national lawmakers, top commissioners, and the pioneer PDP chairman in Delta State, James Manager.

Speaking to newsmen, Aniagwu confirmed the governor’s switch.

“The governor believes this move will better align Delta with national development goals,” he said.

Political analysts believe this shift will shake things up ahead of the 2027 general elections. It could change the power dynamics in the South-South region.

Delta State has been under PDP control since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. Oborevwori’s defection now puts APC in a stronger position in the oil-rich region.

Repositioning for 2027 and Beyond

Oborevwori’s move could encourage other top PDP figures to cross over to APC. Observers say this may signal a larger wave of defections.

The APC has been trying to strengthen its hold in the South-South and Southeast, where PDP has enjoyed long-time dominance.

Oborevwori assumed office in May 2023 courtesy of his benefactor, former Gov. Okowa. His switch to APC comes as a surprise to many of his supporters.

“We didn’t see this coming. But we respect his decision,” said a local PDP youth leader in Asaba.

There’s now speculation about whether Okowa and other PDP leaders will follow him to the APC or remain with the opposition party.

No official statement yet from PDP national headquarters, but insiders say a response is being prepared.
