IGP Deploys Special Squad to Combat Rising Violence Nationwide

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of a special squad to tackle increasing violence across Nigeria.

He directed all Police Mobile Force (PMF) squadrons to keep at least one fully equipped, combat-ready unit on standby at all times.

Egbetokun issued the directive during a meeting with Squadron Commanders in Abuja on Tuesday. His decision follows recent bandit attacks in Kwara, Benue, and Sokoto States, which have claimed multiple lives.

In recent weeks, violence has surged in Plateau, Benue, Enugu, and other states.

“The PMF was created as a strike force—to be swift, decisive, and combat-ready. Effective immediately, all PMF squadrons must maintain at least one fully equipped, combat-ready unit on standby at all times.”

He stressed that these units must be ready to assist state commands in emergencies, high-risk operations, or crisis situations.

Training and Structural Reforms

To enhance efficiency, each squadron will send one unit for quarterly training focused on ethics, professionalism, and responsible policing.

“These sessions will go beyond operational proficiency, placing strong emphasis on ethics, professionalism, and the principles of responsible policing.”

Egbetokun also announced a review of squadron sizes to improve agility and effectiveness.

“Currently, squadron sizes will be reviewed and reduced to ensure operational effectiveness and agility. From this moment, PMF commanders will be held vicariously responsible for the conduct of their personnel.”

Withdrawal from Escort Duties

The IGP reiterated that mobile police officers will be withdrawn from escort duties to refocus their efforts on tackling violent crimes.

“As you are aware, directives have already been issued concerning the withdrawal of PMF personnel from authorised deployments. It is the duty of all commanders to enforce this directive without delay.”

He warned that indiscipline within the PMF will no longer be tolerated.

“The Nigeria Police Force will no longer allow the values, standards, and discipline that once defined the police mobile force to be undermined.”
