A violent attack in Kashmir – India-administered territory to the north, has left at least 26 tourists dead, with several others injured, authorities reported.

The mass shooting occurred in Baisaran, a picturesque meadow near Pahalgam, an area commonly referred to as the “Switzerland of India.”

Four armed men stormed the resort area and began firing at close range, targeting dozens of visitors, according to police sources.

Officials identified the assailants as militants opposing India’s control over Kashmir.

“My husband was shot in the head!” a grieving woman told reporters, describing the horror.

Omar Abdullah, the region’s leader, acknowledged the gravity of the situation.

“This attack is much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years,” he stated on social media.

Most of the casualties were Indian nationals, according to some reports.

Authorities have launched an extensive nationwide manhunt for the attackers.

Government Responds

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the assault and promised swift action.

“I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. All possible assistance is being provided to those affected.”

He further assured that those responsible would be held accountable.

“Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice…they will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will get even stronger.”

Amit Shah, India’s Minister of Home Affairs, echoed the sentiment.

“We will come down heavily on the perpetrators with the harshest consequences.”

The incident happened during U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance’s visit to India.

Reacting to the attack, Vance expressed his condolences.

“Over the past few days, we have been overcome with the beauty of this country and its people. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn this horrific attack.”

President Donald Trump also released a statement calling the attack “deeply disturbing“.
