Alabi Quadri, the teenager who went viral in 2023 for standing in front of Peter Obi’s convoy, has been discharged and acquitted.
A Lagos court ruled on Thursday, April 17, 2025, that he had no case to answer after spending months in custody.
Quadri was arrested in January over armed robbery allegations brought against him by the police. His trial was held at the Apapa Magistrate Court, Orege, Ajegunle, presided over by Magistrate A. O. Olorunfemi.
The court found no substantial evidence linking him to the crime.
His case drew attention after reports suggested he was abducted by hoodlums following his viral fame.
The ordeal began when area boys, angry over not receiving a share of his gifts, allegedly framed him. His arrest sparked outrage among human rights activists, who insisted he was a victim of a failed justice system.
Lawyer Demands ₦100 Million Compensation
Quadri’s lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has demanded ₦100 million in compensation from the Nigerian Police Force. He called his client’s ordeal an injustice.
“Quadri’s case is a painful example of the putrefying corruption, monstrous impunity, and pervasive injustice in the Nigeria Police Force,” Effiong said.
He also called for the immediate removal of the DPO of Amukoko Divisional Headquarters and disciplinary action against officers involved in his arrest.
“If these demands are not met, we will initiate legal actions to seek redress,” Effiong warned.
Human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi was present in court to show support. Conspiracy theorists online insist Quadri’s ordeal was due to his support for the opposition party in the 2023 general election.
