Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine might lead to a world war if Kyiv and its partners do not stand firm. He made his remarks in an interview on CBS’ 60 Minutes that aired on Sunday.
Zelenskyy explained that the stakes are very high because the conflict has dragged on for over three years. He said, “If we do not stand firm, he (Russian President Vladimir Putin) will advance further.” He added, “not just idle speculation,” and claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin aims “to revive the Russian Empire and reclaim territories currently under NATO protection.”
He warned, “And the United States being part of NATO means it will be involved in any potential conflict. Considering all of this, I believe it could escalate into a world war.”
Call for Firm Resistance by Kyiv
Zelenskyy insists that any ceasefire must guarantee Kyiv’s security. “A just peace for our country would be to not lose our sovereignty or our independence,” he said.
He made clear that Ukraine will never recognize the territories under Russian control as part of Russia. Instead, he affirmed that Ukraine would reclaim all of its lands.
The Ukrainian president recalled discussions with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, saying he warned repeatedly that Putin “can’t be trusted.” Zelenskyy argued that previous ceasefires have failed because of Putin’s “desire” to keep the fight going.
He contended that the global security structure is at risk if Russia continues its advances unchecked. Regions in Europe and even the United States face the possibility of being dragged into the conflict due to their alliances and interconnected defense systems.

This is why I say that by giving us weapons, other countries are protecting their own people.”
He extended an invitation to Trump, adding, “I would invite you to Ukraine with pleasure.” Zelenskyy urged his counterpart to visit and see the situation firsthand. He remarked, “It will not be theater, with preparing actors in the streets and the (city) center. We don’t do this. We don’t need it. You can go exactly where you want, in any city which has been under attacks. What I said to them, just to come and to understand.”
